The Saab 9-5 is a mid-size car that first entered the market in the 1997 model year. It competed directly with the popular contemporary Volvo 850 and later the V70 , which it also resembles in terms of features such as interior and exterior dimensions and cargo volume. The first generation was produced for over ten years, more precisely until the 2009 model year before the new, more luxurious and more expensive Saab 9-5 under the leadership of Victor Mueller was introduced in 2010. This model only lasted two years when Saab filed for bankruptcy and the last cars were produced in Trollhättan in 2011 as 2012 models.
The first generation was manufactured under the leadership of the American General Motors and was available as both a station wagon and a sedan. The most common drivetrains are gasoline-powered with a four-speed automatic transmission (from the 2002 model year the transmission received an extra gear) or a five-speed manual transmission. The mildest engine variants were four-cylinder with a displacement of either 2 or 2.3 liters, of which the former is the most fuel-efficient. There was also a 200 horsepower 3-liter V6 engine that was shared with, among others, the Opel Omega of the time. The engine was strong with fine driving characteristics but with significantly higher fuel consumption than the four-cylinder engines. Diesel engines of 1.9 or 2.2 liters were also offered but are not as common as the diesel trend did not reach Sweden until the mid-2000s.
The last year models of the Saab 9-5 are more commonly found with diesel engines. There is speculation whether the second generation Saab 9-5 will gain collector value in the future as the model is the last Saab car with total production figures of only 12,000 copies. With the second generation Saab 9-5, a step was taken up to the so-called premium segment and the aim was clearly to compete with the Audi A6 , Mercedes-Benz E-class and BMW 5-series . This generation of the 9-5 is available with both petrol and diesel engines, all equipped with turbo, from 1.6 to 2.8 liters and with or without four-wheel drive. The most economical and environmentally friendly choice is the petrol-powered 1.6-liter engine.
