There are few car brands, if any, that symbolize exclusivity like Rolls-Royce does. Who hasn't heard the simile "the Rolls-Royce of watches" or "the Rolls-Royce of motorboats"? Today, Rolls-Royce is owned by the German car manufacturer BMW, but the history of the venerable British brand began in the early 20th century when Charles Stewart Rolls and Frederick Henry Royce began manufacturing passenger cars.

In its birth, the brand only manufactured cars but then began to develop, among other things, marine engines and propellers. The vast majority of those who have flown today have been carried through the air by modern jet engines signed Rolls-Royce in both Western and Russian aircraft models. Significant for Rolls-Royce is that the car models were still manufactured in very small volumes and it was not until the introduction of the Silver Shadow model that the volumes became larger when the car model was manufactured in over 30,000 copies over a period of 20 years, between the years 1965 - 1980. The history of Rolls-Royce is a saga with both ups and downs.

The company has been financially strained for many periods. In the late 1960s, the situation began to become acute and the company was declared bankrupt in 1973 but was reconstructed and later bought by the British aircraft manufacturer Vickers in 1980. The modern Rolls-Royce as we know it today took shape in the mid-1990s when a joint development program with BMW was launched. The first model was presented in 1998, the Silver Seraph, and was equipped with BMW's V12 engine. A design that, unlike the contemporary Mercedes-Benz V12 engine (its closest competitor), produced significantly less power and used a single overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder. But this contributed to significantly lower emissions, operating costs and fuel consumption. Recognition for the technology was not long in coming and the engine was chosen as "International Engine of the Year" in 1999 by a jury consisting of motoring journalists from around the world, one of the strongest arguments being the impressively low fuel consumption figures for the engine's size and performance.

It was at this time that the Rolls-Royce brand again became a player to be reckoned with in its narrow class of very lavish and expensive luxury cars. Comparable cars are not many in number, but Mercedes-Benz made a major investment in the early 2000s to revive Maybach as a direct competitor to Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Maybach received very good reviews from the press, but it was an investment that did not turn out well and the brand was later discontinued. Total sales of cars from Rolls-Royce have steadily increased during the 2000s with one exception - the financial crisis in 2009. In 2005, 796 cars were sold and in 2018 the number had risen to 4,107. Since then, the model range has also been significantly broadened and four-door sedans, convertibles, SUVs, and coupé models are now manufactured.
