The Subaru Legacy was first introduced to Swedish customers in 1990 and this generation is characterized by a long and wide hood, small headlights and angular roof lines, which were common design features of the time. It was available as both a sedan and a station wagon (of which the station wagon model is most common in Sweden) and this is consistent for all generations. The station wagon model has the additional name Outback and all cars are four-wheel drive, even the early models from the 1990s, which was unusual for the time. The first generations only had gasoline engines while the later ones are also available with diesel options in some markets, including Sweden. The second generation was released four years after the first and third generations in 1998. Like Honda, Subaru has frequently introduced new generations of its car models, sometimes around every five years, which can be compared to many European competitors whose car models have a life cycle of about twice that. The most common cars on the used market today are the fifth, sixth and seventh generation Subaru Legacy, the latter of which debuted in 2020 and is then only available as an Outback (station wagon) with a gasoline or hybrid engine, in this case electric motors as auxiliary engines for a gasoline-powered 2.5-liter engine.
