Porsche is associated with expensive car models that often compete with exotic and even rarer sports cars. But the brand was also early to introduce more affordable models that cost less than half the price of traditional models and could be sold in large volumes, such as the 914, 924 and 944. The modern successors are significantly sharper in terms of performance and share more technology with the 911 model than the entry-level models of the 1970s and 80s. The first generation Boxster, model 986, was a roadster (removable roof/convertible) that was delivered to the first customer at the end of 1996 and had a price of about half that of a basic 911. An interesting anecdote is that the car was first presented as a concept in 1993 and, which was not entirely common at the time, had a design that was actually very similar to the actual production model. Another anecdote is that the factory in Germany could not meet the high demand and therefore parts of the production were moved to Finland under the manufacturer Valmet Automotive where all production of the coupe model was later also moved. The Boxster 986 sold well from the start and generally received better reviews in the motoring press than Porsche's previous entry-level models. The 986 was at the time the best-selling Porsche until the Cayenne SUV was introduced six years later. In 2005, the second generation was launched with the internal designation 987 and that was also the premiere year for the Cayman, a coupe model of the Boxster. The third generation appeared in 2012 with the designation 981 and the fourth in 2016 as the Boxster/Cayman 718.
