The General Motors-owned Opel brand has, during several periods in its history, made attempts to launch larger premium sedans, sometimes based on other GM cars that had been transferred to receive the Opel brand and some modifications for the European market. But the motoring press described the Opel Insignia as a particularly successful model at its launch in 2008, the car was not only large and spacious but also had a good detail quality that allowed for a higher price.
The first generation Insignia was manufactured from 2008 to 2017 and is available as either a station wagon or a sedan. It is based on the same platform as the mid-range US Chevrolet Malibu and the then Saab 9-5 . While the Malibu had a soft chassis, the Saab 9-5 had a significantly stiffer one. The Opel Insignia is somewhere in between, with an emphasis on the more typically German, more distinctive chassis setup and steering characteristics. Worth noting for the speculator of the Opel Insignia is the update that came with the 2013 model year, which includes a redesigned interior and new front and rear (mainly bumpers and lights). The model is available with both gasoline and diesel engines, of which the diesel engines are the most common, especially for the early model years. The station wagon models have a higher resale value than the sedan models, which is common for most brands on the Swedish market.
For 2017, a completely new Opel Insignia was introduced, which grew in size. The car is based on a bestseller in China – the Buick Regal, but with a stiffer chassis and more direct steering (adapted for the European market). Like its predecessor, it is available as both a sedan and a station wagon, of which the station wagon is usually the most common on the Swedish market. The diesel engines in this generation are called “CDTI” while the petrol models are called “SIDI” with the cylinder capacity (engine size) indicated in combination with these.
