Few cars are as synonymous with the word “small car” as the Nissan Micra. In fact, Nissan was one of the pioneers. It is a class smaller than a Volkswagen Golf and was introduced just when the time was ripe for economical and fuel-efficient passenger cars – the time after the oil crisis. The Micra was first introduced in 1982 and was a great success in the domestic market. The compact dimensions came partly from consumer demand due to the increasingly dense Japanese city traffic. In Sweden, the model only became common when the second generation was launched in 1992 and the smallest engine was 1 liter in cylinder capacity, still competitive today when the light is focused on consumption figures. With a manual gearbox, the Nissan Micra consumed less than 0.4 liters of gasoline per mile. The automatic gearbox of the time was not calibrated in the same way as today and consumption figures for older automatic cars are often a lot higher. Today, these older cars change owners for low sums, which has made it popular as a first-time car. The model has a good reputation for quality and a well-serviced car with low miles on the odometer can still function really well in everyday life. The petrol engine is still 1 liter while the diesel engine has 1.5 liters in cylinder capacity. The Nissan Micra with the small petrol engine is still among the most economical cars in the class.
