The BMW Z4 is a popular sports car and for good reason – it is priced for more wallets than the brand’s larger models and a sporty driver’s environment positioned close to the rear axle makes the car fun to drive. The origin of this class, whose popularity grew significantly in the late 1990s, is that BMW and others wanted to supplement their model range to also include smaller sports models (at this time, the BMW 8 Series and Mercedes SL, which were more than twice as expensive, were what was available). Competitors from both Mercedes-Benz and Audi and others appeared close behind, but the first to reach customers was BMW.
The model got off to a flying start and the order lists became long when it became James Bond's official car in the movie "Goldeneye" in 1995. The differences between the older Z3 and Z4 are large. To begin with, the Z4 is larger in terms of exterior and interior dimensions with improved detail quality and, of course, more modern equipment. A good driving feel is present in both cars, but the older model has more feel for the road despite a slightly stiffer chassis in the latter. The Z4 also offers higher comfort in the form of less road noise and vibrations. Instead of renaming the model when it is newly launched, the Z4 went through generations. The first generation was launched for the 2004 model year and is called internally (and also externally among BMW enthusiasts) by the body name E85. This was replaced for the 2009 model year by the E89, which today enjoys greater popularity on the used market, but both models are attractive and are steadily gaining in price.
The third generation of the BMW Z4 appeared in 2018 and received contemporary raised headlights and split air intakes in the lower bumper, as well as a sharply cut grille, or “kidneys”, as it is called in BMW parlance.
