3 tips for a successful caravan holiday

12 juni, 2024

Almost six out of ten Swedes would consider going on holiday with a motorhome or caravan. The freedom is the most attractive, closely followed by the opportunity for experiences and activities. In addition, it is affordable. This is shown by a survey conducted by our sister company Forsbergs Fritidscenter .

Camping or a motorhome? Dinner in the awning or at a restaurant? There are many choices to consider when planning your camping trip. Here are a few practical tips to make your road trip a success!

Budget-friendly pitches or campsites?

Regardless of your holiday budget, it's a good idea to check out the options before you park your campervan or caravan at the campsite and sit in the sun lounger. Camping prices can vary greatly depending on the facilities and popularity of the site. Another tip is to take advantage of the free activities that campsites offer, especially for children. Summer offers many free activities such as swimming, cycling, hiking and exploring nature areas.

Cooking instead of going to a restaurant*

Cook your own food to save money and have a more authentic experience. Shop at stores outside the campsite area to further reduce food costs.

*It's vacation time. Treat yourself to a dinner out or two!

First plan – then stroll

Plan your trip carefully, but leave room for spontaneous adventures. The most scenic places are often off the highways. Like behind the crest of a leafy country road, by a quiet lake or at a dizzying height. Try planning a route from point A to B that avoids the major highways and discover Sweden's hidden gems.

Tip: The Swedish Transport Administration's list of rest areas in the country

Choose the right tow truck for your caravan

When towing a caravan, it is important to choose a tow truck that can handle the extra weight and maintain stability. The vehicle should have enough power to "handle the pressure" while still maintaining a firm grip on the road.

Tips from our side are:

Choose an engine with around 150 hp or more for a comfortable ride

Choose a car with a relatively low total weight, around 2200 kg, and you will reduce the risk that the combined total weight of the car and caravan will exceed 3,500 kg – which is the limit for those with a B driving license.

Use the Swedish Transport Administration's handy calculator to see how heavy a caravan a specific car is allowed to tow. Find the calculator here

At the Swedish Transport Agency you can see how heavy a caravan your car can tow.
