How to keep children safe and cool in the car this summer

9 juni, 2026

More and more people are taking their families along to discover Sweden by car. But how do you actually travel safely and securely with children in a car and what do you need to consider?

The right car seat for your child

First and foremost, make sure you have a car seat that is appropriate for your child's height, weight and age. Children shorter than 135 centimetres should use a special restraint in the car, such as a baby seat, car seat, booster seat or booster cushion.

The Swedish Transport Administration recommends that children travel rear-facing until at least 4–5 years of age, preferably longer. Also check that the child seat is approved and not too old, damaged or outgrown. New child seats sold must be approved according to UN R.129, while older seats with UN R.44 approval may still be used if they are in good condition.

Keep your car cool

The climate in the car is important for both mood and well-being. Since children are more sensitive to heatstroke, it is important that the child stays cool. Here you can of course use the car's AC, but there are also accessories that help your child stay cool in the car seat, such as seat cushions adapted for summer climates or summer-protected clothing.

Use sunshades on the windows to reduce the strong sun and make sure your child drinks water during the journey. Never leave children alone in the car on hot days, even for a short time. The temperature in a switched off car can quickly become dangerously high.

Traveling with children in the car can be a challenge. Fresh air breaks can help!

Reduce the risk of motion sickness in children

Unfortunately, some children experience motion sickness on long car journeys. Some small but oh so important tips to avoid nausea are to keep the temperature in the car at the right level, you can also adjust the angle of the car seat so that your child sits comfortably, relaxed and can look out the window.

Try to avoid things that can make the nausea worse, such as your child reading or looking down at a screen for long periods of time. A mirror can help your child look up, which can also reduce nausea. Avoid large meals just before departure and bring water and something light to eat.

Only use accessories from recognized suppliers that are both tested and safe! Also remember to avoid loose objects in the car as they could pose a danger in the event of a collision.

The journey doesn't have to be long.

You don't have to go far for a car trip to feel like an adventure! It doesn't have to be the longest journey to the most magnificent destination, maybe your vacation is just around the corner? And don't forget to pack a good lunch !
