Pack the car correctly for the driving holiday - this is how you do it

2 februari, 2026

If you've ever gone on a road trip, you're probably familiar with the fact that – yes, there's usually more packing than expected. And the art of "packing right" becomes extra important when you're driving a car that's more heavily loaded than you might be used to.

1. Heaviest goes first, and lowest goes last

Pack heavy items at the bottom and in the middle of the trunk, and try to use the entire surface area of the space before stacking on top. This will ensure that the packing is as stable as possible.

2. Use grids

If you own a station wagon, make sure to have a grille/protection installed between the luggage and the passenger compartment to prevent luggage from flying into the passenger compartment during sudden braking.

3. Minimize picking

Try to minimize the number of loose items inside the passenger compartment and make sure they are in bags or luggage to minimize the risk of sudden braking or a possible accident.

4. Make sure the roof can handle the pressure

If you are going to have a roof box, check the car's instruction manual to make sure that the car roof can actually handle the roof box and make sure to keep track of the maximum weight of the roof box itself, so that you don't pack too heavy.

5. Think like luggage, stuck on the roof

Pack the roof box with the heaviest items in the middle, just like in the trunk, for added stability. Fill with lighter items along the sides to keep the contents in place while you drive.
