Road trip in Norrland - sights you must not miss

Keen to discover Norrland this summer? Completely understandable. But if it's your first time driving north, it can be difficult to know which area to start exploring. That's why we enlisted the help of a local expert!

Discover the Wilderness Road

The fact that Sweden is large is especially noticeable in the northern parts. If you need tips on sights to visit this summer, we recommend that you head to Västernorrland, and more specifically the Wilderness Road. With its 500 kilometers, it stretches from northern Jämtland to southern Lapland and offers wide views, flowing rapids and majestic mountains.

When does Vildmarksvägen open?

Because no, the entire road is not actually open all year round. The section over Stekenjokk is open between June 6 and October 15.

Places to stop along the way

We enlisted the help of local resident Emelie Åström who gave us her best tips on places you just have to stop at along the way. She compares driving along Vildmarksvägen to hiking on wheels. That really doesn't sound wrong, we think!

Stairstep rapids

Just south of Saxnäs, in Lapland, you will find this impressive rapid. Here, nature itself has created a several hundred meter long, roaring staircase. Next to the rapids there are plenty of parking spaces and during the summer season also a café and toilets.

Crystal clear water in Trappstegsforsen

The March Sled

A few miles from the Norwegian border lies Marsliden, at the foot of Marsfjället. The village, which today has around 30 inhabitants, became widely known through the author Bernhard Nordhs Nybyggarna . Did you know: You can actually visit a replica of Pålsson's cottage from Nordhs's books in the village!

Roasted chicken

The Stekenjokk Plateau is considered by many to be one of the most stunning parts of the Wilderness Route. The snow here can be several meters deep, even in June, making for a magnificent experience.
