Bonus malus 2023 - here are the changes

The turn of the year is approaching and with it new changes to the bonus malus system. At the beginning of November, the Government announced that they are abolishing the bonus system. This is the latest!

Changes will be introduced on January 1st that will tighten the requirements for the amount of emissions. For those who are going to buy a new electric or hybrid car, the bonus will be removed and you will no longer receive a payment.

Changes Bonus Malus 2023

• The previous Government announcement that the maximum amount for bonus payments for electric cars would be reduced from SEK 70,000 to SEK 50,000 has now been dropped. As of November 8, 2022, the climate bonus will be completely removed.

• This also cancels the previous decision to lower the maximum amount for hybrid cars to SEK 10,000.

• The limit for when a car is eligible for a bonus is also being lowered. From 50 grams of CO2/kilometer to 30 grams of CO2/kilometer.

The previous limitation where companies could only receive 35 percent of the price difference between a bonus car and a comparable fossil-fueled car will be removed.

What happens to the reduction obligation then?

The previous government intended to increase the reduction obligation, which the Riksdag also agreed to. However, this increase has been paused for 2023, taking into account the high fuel prices.

In November, the Government announced that it intends to lower the reduction obligation to the EU's lowest level. This is not expected to come into effect until 1 January 2024.
