Sweden has a long and proud automotive history, but which of all the iconic models does our hearts beat the hardest for? We asked the Swedes themselves to list their top 15. And the answers to the list were both expected and slightly unexpected.
Classic elegance with ornate chrome details or streamlined design with a snorting engine? According to a Sifo survey, the now legendary Volvo Amazon is the Swedes' all-time favorite. The Volvo Amazon was manufactured in approximately 667,000 units between 1956 and 1970 and was Volvo's first real export success.
Second on the list is the Volvo P1800, manufactured in approximately 47,000 copies between 1961 and 1973 and made famous worldwide through the television series Helgonet. In third place is the Volvo V70 . The car that has become a symbol of the Swedish family car and which still tops sales on the second-hand market. The Volvo V70 was manufactured in approximately 1,250,000 copies between 1996 and 2016.
Volvo's dominance continues in places 4-7 with the Volvo V90, Volvo PV 444, Volvo XC90 and Volvo Duett. Only in eighth place does a new brand enter, and that is Saab with the Saab 9-5. Just outside the top 10 is also Saab's best-selling Saab 900, manufactured in approximately 908,000 units between 1979 and 1993.
Supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg does not make the top 10. The most popular Koenigsegg cars are the Koenigsegg CC, the brand's first series-produced car, and the new speed monster Koenigsegg Jesko. The Koenigsegg CC and Koenigsegg Jesko occupy the 12th and 13th spots, respectively.
-There are many Swedish cars that have become real sales successes, but few have achieved the Volvo Amazon's soaring cult status. It was the first Volvo with design ambitions and it's easy to fall in love with the wealth of detail. I understand why the Amazon is still the dream car for many today.
