We took the pulse of the Swedes and asked them which traffic situations they find the most difficult. As you might already guess, reversing with a trailer is something that gets the heart rate up for many. Here we have collected our best tips on how to reverse correctly and easily with a trailer.
Make sure the trailer is properly connected to the towing vehicle and that all lights and brakes are working properly before you start backing up.
Start by driving forward properly so that the vehicle is straight. Then half the job is done.
Before you start backing up, look at the area where you will be backing up and plan how you will drive. Always keep in mind the length of your trailer and how much turning radius it may need.
Grasp the bottom edge of the steering wheel, and the trailer will turn in the same direction as you turn the steering wheel. If you want the trailer to go left, move your hand to the left. If you want it to turn right, move your hand to the right.
Drive slowly in reverse, using your car's mirrors to monitor the trailer's movements. Keep an eye on the steering wheel angle and be careful not to overcompensate. Small steering wheel movements.
If you feel that the trailer is not at the right angle or if you are unsure of your position, do not hesitate to stop and correct it.
Reversing with a trailer takes practice. The more you practice, the better you will get at it.
