Sweden's richest municipalities, with Danderyd at the forefront before Vellinge in Skåne, have the highest proportion of electric cars. In these municipalities, approximately one in twelve cars runs entirely on electricity. At the same time, Dorotea in Västerbotten has just received its very first electric car. – The Swedish electric car map is extremely segregated, says Daniel Odsberg, sales manager at Kvdbil .
Once again, we at Kvdbil , using statistics from Vroom, have mapped the electric car fleet in Sweden's counties and municipalities. In this year's analysis, the method has also been refined by only including vehicles that are privately owned or leased by private individuals. The reason we have chosen to do it this way is because many electric cars are company cars and leased cars that are registered to companies and finance companies, which may have a completely different address. In addition, a large number of electric cars are owned by car dealers and car rental companies.
But neither this adjustment, nor the updated statistics for 2023, result in any significant reversals. Stockholm County maintains its position as the county with the highest share of electric cars, with 4.9 percent, followed by Halland with 4.4 percent and Västra Götaland with 4.2 percent. Uppsala (3.9%) and Skåne (3.7%) are also among the top five.
The municipal list is topped by Danderyd, Sweden's richest municipality, with 7.9 percent electric cars, closely followed by Vellinge with 7.8 percent. The top 10 list continues with the following affluent municipalities: Vaxholm (7.5%), Nacka (7.4%), Täby (7.3%), Kungsbacka (7.1%), Lidingö (7.0%), Lerum (6.7%), Härryda (6.7%) and Ekerö (6.5%).
– We can conclude that there is a strong correlation between high average income and electric car density. This is not surprising given the previously high prices of electric cars. However, we are now seeing a development where more and more electric car models can compete in price with fossil cars, while the supply of affordable alternatives on the second-hand market is growing rapidly. This enables a broader and faster transition throughout the country, says Daniel Odsberg.
The lowest proportion of electric cars is in Dorotea in Västerbotten. In fact, the municipality did not have a single electric car registered to a private individual until the turn of the year. But since January this year, an electric car has also appeared in Dorotea! Dorotea is followed by Arjeplog (0.3%), Munkfors (0.4%) and Sorsele (0.4%). Other municipalities at the bottom are Älvdalen (0.5%), Strömsund (0.5%), Pajala (0.6%), Arvidsjaur (0.6%) and Vilhelmina (0.6%). Daniel Odsberg emphasizes that there is a large gap between southern and central Sweden on the one hand, and the northern part of the country on the other.
– The fact that Umeå, one of Sweden's larger municipalities, ranks as the first municipality north of the Dalälven in 73rd place probably says it all. Lack of availability of public fast chargers, lower average income and greater concern about range and how electric cars handle the cold are likely explanations for why northern Sweden is lagging behind, says Daniel Odsberg.
