New benefit rules for green cars

4 april, 2022

From July 1, 2022, simpler, and according to many, fairer rules will apply to benefit values for new electric and plug-in hybrids.

It has long been difficult to understand the rules for how electric and plug-in hybrids should be taxed preferentially. But now the Riksdag has hammered out a change to this. Starting in mid-year, fixed deductions will be introduced, which will provide equal preferential tax for cars with the same price tag.

In the previous regulations, the benefit value was set based on a comparison with a similar car model without electrification . The consequence has been that similar cars with similar prices ultimately receive completely different benefit values.

This discount applies to all electric cars.

As of July 1st of this year, the amounts below will be deducted from the Swedish Tax Agency's list price. The change applies to cars registered after July 1st, 2022.

  • Plug-in hybrids: 140,000 kronorr

  • Gas cars: SEK 100,000

  • Electric cars and hydrogen cars: SEK 350,000

Limitation is set based on new price

The new regulations set a limit so that an electric car with a lower price tag will not receive too large a deduction in relation to the car's new price. The deduction may not be greater than half the car's new price, which means that an electric car that costs SEK 600,000 may only receive a deduction of SEK 300,000.

Cars that cost less than 700,000 kronor can only deduct half their new price. It is worth noting that the new rules apply to cars that have already been ordered.

Discount for ethanol cars is abolished

In addition, an adjustment is being made regarding ethanol cars, they will no longer be considered an environmentally friendly car according to the Swedish Tax Agency. Drivers of ethanol cars will therefore not be able to make deductions. Nor will you who drive a hybrid car that cannot be recharged be entitled to make deductions under the new regulations.

Electric cars in the mid-price range benefit

Electric cars that cost closer to a million will receive a higher benefit value after July 1 compared to before. Instead, electric cars in the mid-price segment will benefit, they will receive a tax reduction of around 150 kronor per month.
