A small, cheap car with good ownership economics, does that sound like something to you? Here we present three cars that are perfect as a commuter car, first car or as a second car.
Are you familiar with the so-called "triplet cars"? We are talking about the Toyota Aygo , Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107 , which were born from the vision of offering a cheap, compact and fuel-efficient city car for the European market. The models were built on a common platform. Toyota was responsible for the development of the engine and drivetrain, while Citroën and Peugeot had primary responsibility for the design, interior and equipment. All three models were manufactured in the Czech Republic in a factory built specifically for the purpose.
The engine is petrol-powered, three-cylinder and has just over 70 horsepower. The gearbox is manual as standard, although an automatic gearbox was available as an option. A timing chain instead of a timing belt is safe. Among the strengths are:
Low cost of ownership
They are fuel efficient
The service is cheap.
Vehicle tax is calculated in hundred kopecks...
...and thanks to low power, the insurance cost is also low
However, the small engine these cars have means compromises in terms of limited performance and power. The interior is minimalist, even plasticky, and due to the lightweight construction and simple soundproofing, the noise level can be noticeable.
Since 2022, only the Toyota Aygo can be ordered. Nowadays, the Aygo has also received an X in the model name, which should be read as “crossover”. A small car in rubber boots, although you should probably refrain from off-road adventures in this distinctive city car. In addition to being the last remaining of the triplets, the Aygo is also the model with the highest resale value. For example, statistics show that the retention is 55 percent of the new price after three years and 6,000 kilometers, which means a loss in value of SEK 2,800 per month.
There are plenty of triple cars on the used market, with prices starting at around SEK 10,000, so compare carefully and choose the right one.
Common inspection notes are:
Uneven braking effect
Worn shock absorbers and springs
Leaking exhaust system
Uneven light image
Test drive, listen, inspect! Also, always be observant for rust, especially in the undercarriage.
