When we look at what a car costs to own, we calculate what is called TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). This means that we compile the costs associated with owning the car each month. The costs that do not usually come monthly are also divided into just one monthly cost, for an easier overview.
In our calculation, we have assumed three years of ownership and approximately 4,500 kilometers driven, where we also include costs for depreciation, fuel or electricity, insurance, tax and service.
The cheapest to own in the comparison is the Kia Cee'd Sportswagon Plug-in Hybrid Advance, with a monthly cost of just under SEK 4,000. This is followed by the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Active and the Volkswagen ID.4 Pro Performance electric car.
“Many people focus on the purchase price when choosing a car, but depreciation is often the biggest cost. The Kia Cee'd Sportswagon Plug-in Hybrid Advance combines low operating costs with a stable resale value,” says Daniel Odsberg, Sales Manager at Kvdbil .
The difference between the cheapest and most expensive car in the comparison is just over 3,600 SEK per month, which corresponds to more than SEK 43,000 per year.
The most expensive model in the compilation is the Volvo XC60 T6 Recharge AWD, with an estimated cost of ownership of just over SEK 7,500 per month. The high cost is mainly explained by a greater decrease in value.
“A larger, high-performance SUV is often more expensive to own, even used. At the same time, the analysis shows that it is possible to find spacious family cars with significantly lower ownership costs if you compare the alternatives carefully,” says Odsberg.
The difference between the cheapest and most expensive family car in the comparison is just over 3,600 SEK per month – over 43,000 SEK per year.

About the survey
Kvdbil has analyzed the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for a selection of the most popular family cars on the second-hand market. The analysis includes all costs that result from the purchase decision, including hidden costs such as depreciation.
The calculation is based on an ownership period of three years and an average annual mileage of 1,500 km. The calculation uses fuel prices of SEK 16 per liter for gasoline, SEK 17 per liter for diesel and an electricity price of SEK 3 per kWh. For plug-in hybrids, an electric power share of 60 percent has been used.
Insurance costs are based on average premiums for each car model from Söderberg & Partners Privat, while service costs are based on Autoexperten's lowest price per car model.
