The electric car is gaining ground – but is still uncommon in half of Sweden

13 februari, 2026

The electric car fleet continued to grow strongly in 2025. The number of privately owned and privately leased electric cars increased from 190,076 to 237,730, an increase of 25 percent in one year. At the same time, the share of electric cars in the total vehicle stock rose from 4.3 to 5.3 percent.

But despite the rapid growth, the electric car has not yet had a broad impact in large parts of the country. In more than half of Sweden's municipalities, the share of electric cars is still below 4 percent, and in many rural municipalities, electric cars remain an uncommon phenomenon.

Established in big cities – uncommon in many municipalities

The development is largely driven by the metropolitan regions and their surrounding municipalities. In Stockholm County, 7.6 percent of all cars are now electric, followed by Halland and Västra Götaland counties with just over 6 percent.

At the municipal level, several municipalities have exceeded ten percent, with Danderyd at the top at 12.1 percent, followed by Nacka, Vaxholm and Vellinge. At the same time, 212 of the country's 290 municipalities are below the national average, which underlines how unevenly electric cars are distributed in the country.

At the bottom of the list are still small, sparsely populated municipalities. Dorotea and Munkfors have the lowest electric car density in the country, where about one per thousand of the cars are electric cars. In Dorotea, there are only two electric cars registered in private ownership.

– The number of electric cars is growing rapidly and reaching new levels nationally, but the figures show that the breakthrough is still lacking in large parts of the country. The electric car has established itself as an obvious choice in some regions and municipalities, but is still uncommon in others, says Daniel Odsberg, sales manager at Kvdbil .

The differences are not about certain regions lagging behind in development, but about different conditions, Daniel Odsberg points out.

– It is clear that economy, driving patterns and access to charging play a major role. At the same time, there are factors that can contribute to a wider spread in the long term. The range of models is increasing, the range is improving and the used market is growing rapidly, which lowers the thresholds for more households. This spring, a new, targeted electric car premium will also be introduced with a focus on rural areas, which can help more people take the step. But so far, the electric car is primarily a big-city phenomenon, says Daniel Odsberg.

About the compilation
Kvdbil 's statistics on car volumes in Sweden are obtained from the statistics company Vroom. In order to provide as accurate a picture as possible of the geographical distribution of electric cars, only privately owned and privately leased cars are included in the compilation. Many electric cars in Sweden are registered to companies, leasing companies or car dealers, which have a different address than where the car is used.
