Sales of used electric cars increased sharply in the first half of the year

The number of electric cars sold during the first half of the year increased by 36 percent compared to the same period last year. The used market is the big engine with an increase that is almost four times greater than new car sales, our compilation shows.

A total of 85,524 electric cars were sold as new or used between January and June 2025. This represents an increase of 36 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

It is mainly the used market that is growing: 16,629 more electric cars were sold as used during the first half of the year, an increase of 63 percent. The share of new electric cars increased by 5,829, an increase of 16 percent – thus the used market increased almost four times more. In total, 22,458 more electric cars were sold in H1 2025 compared to H1 2024.

– The electric car is becoming as obvious on the used market as gasoline and diesel cars have been for decades. Several factors contribute to this: Technical developments have made electric cars more reliable and attractive. In addition, the total cost of ownership for a battery car is often lower than for a fossil-powered equivalent, says Daniel Odsberg, Sales Manager at Kvdbil .

Largest increase in Västernorrland

The largest sales increase this half of the year occurred in Västernorrland County, where 64 percent more electric cars were sold during the first half of the year compared to last year. This is followed by Blekinge with an increase of 57 percent and third is Kalmar with 54 percent.

Stockholm County has by far the most electric cars, where the number of cars sold increased by 38 percent. In the other metropolitan regions, the increases were more modest: 27 percent for Västra Götaland and 25 percent for Skåne.

– When counties like Västernorrland and Blekinge show the largest increases, we see that interest in electric cars is not only concentrated in large cities. This is due to the fact that the charging infrastructure has been expanded rapidly throughout the country, which means that the market has matured, says Odsberg.
