More and more people are choosing a used electric car

In the fourth quarter of 2025, almost 300,000 used cars were sold, divided between the car trade, the private market and companies, a decrease of just over 2 percent compared to the same period last year. A total of 1,253,417 used cars were sold during the year.

– The used car market continued to develop well in 2025. A slightly weaker fourth quarter does not change the overall picture, especially as the fourth quarter of 2024 was unusually strong and one single month stood out. November was weaker, but in December the volumes caught up again. In a situation where many households remain cost-conscious, used cars fulfill an important function and are often perceived as the most rational choice, says Daniel Odsberg, Sales Manager Kvdbil .

Electrified cars are driving the increase

During the year, sales of electric cars increased drastically, by 42 percent. In the case of electric cars, this is an increase from 26,983 cars to a total of 91,328. Plug-in hybrids also saw a sharp increase with 13,125 more vehicles sold (+15.4%) to a total of 98,409. At the same time, sales of petrol cars decreased by 28,431 (-4.7%) and diesel cars by 10,713 vehicles (-2.9%).

But it wasn't just in sales that electric cars went against the grain. When we look at our sales statistics on kvdbil.se, based on approximately 26,000 sales per year, it shows that electric cars also held their value better than other fuels. During the year, the average price of used cars fell by 8 percent. The decline was greatest for gasoline cars, which lost 12 percent, followed by diesel, which was down 8.5 percent. Electric cars fell by 7 percent, plug-in hybrids by 6.5 percent and electric hybrids by 1.5 percent.

– Electric cars have matured in the second-hand market. The range is wider, uncertainty about range and batteries has decreased, and prices have become more accessible. This means that more people are daring to take the step, even as second owners, says Daniel Odsberg.

Prospects for 2026

In 2026, Daniel Odsberg estimates that the market may be characterized by growing used inventory and continued price pressure, especially on older fossil-fueled cars. At the same time, interest in electric cars is only expected to continue to increase. Newer used plug-in hybrids may also benefit, not least as a result of increased vehicle taxes on newly registered plug-in hybrids.
