List: The municipalities with the most A-tractors and mopeds in the country

Dorotea in Västerbotten has the most A-tractors per inhabitant, while the most mopeds are found in the Stockholm municipality of Nacka. This is shown by a compilation made by us at Kvdbil , based on data from the Swedish Transport Agency and the statistics company Vroom.

Sweden is currently experiencing a boom in A-tractors, with the number of vehicles more than doubling since 2019. Interest in owning moped cars is also high, although a slight decline was seen last year. At the end of 2023, there were approximately 17,000 moped cars and 56,000 A-tractors registered. We at Kvdbil have mapped out where in the country these vehicles are most common.

In Västerbotten County, it is easiest to see an A-tractor. Here are the three municipalities that have the most A-tractors per inhabitant. In first place we find Dorotea with 34.1 A-tractors per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Åsele with 28.5 and Vilhelmina with 27.7. When it comes to mopeds, Nacka has the most vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants with 7.3. In second place is Danderyd with 6.2 and in third place is Kungsbacka with 5.8.

Changed rules behind the increase

In 2020, the Swedish Transport Agency relaxed the rules, making it possible to convert even automatic transmission cars into A-tractors. The change in rules has simplified the conversion of more modern cars into A-tractors and contributed to the sharp increase in recent years, says Daniel Odsberg, Sales Manager at Kvdbil .

– We are now seeing more and more Porsche Cayenne, Audi, BMW and Mercedes as A-tractors. As a result, the culture around A-tractors has also grown, which is causing a stir.

According to our review, Volvo and Nissan are the most popular brands to build A-tractors from. Common choices, perhaps a little surprising, are also Suzuki and the truck brand Scania. Suzuki's Jeep Vitara is particularly popular to convert into an A-tractor, and converting large, heavy trucks into A-tractors has become a strong trend.

Height age limit

But not everything has become easier for motorized youth. Last year, several tightenings were introduced to the rules for how an A-tractor may be driven. Previously, A-tractors did not have a seatbelt requirement, but now it is mandatory. Another new rule is that passengers may only ride if they are seated in the designated seat. Since June 1 this year, a one-year probationary period has also applied to the AM card – the driving license that applies to mopeds class 1 and A-tractors. As if that were not enough, the European Parliament also voted earlier this spring to raise the age limit for A-tractors from 15 to 16 years. In addition to the increased age limit, driving license requirements are also being tightened. The AM card is being scrapped in favor of a B1 driving license, a driving license for young people between 16 and 21 years of age that requires both a theory and driving test.

– In relation to the number of vehicles, A-tractors are overrepresented in accident statistics, so it is good that something is being done to increase safety. At the same time, many new requirements are now being introduced at once. It remains to be seen what effects this will have on interest in A-tractors, says Daniel Odsberg.
