The wind in your hair, the sun on your face and an open sky above – nothing signals summer like a convertible. And now car broker Kvdbil reveals where in the country convertibles are most popular.
The compilation, which is based on data from Vroom, shows that there are currently just over 54,000 convertibles on Swedish roads. This corresponds to an average of 1.1 percent of the country's car fleet - at the same time, the proportion varies greatly between municipalities.
The most convertibles in relation to the number of passenger cars are found in Vellinge in Skåne, where a full 3.6 percent of all cars are open. This is followed by Lomma (2.7%) and Simrishamn (2.6%). It is clear that Skåne dominates – six of the ten municipalities with the highest proportion of convertibles are located in the county.
– In southern Sweden, where the heat lingers a little longer and the sky feels a little bigger, many people choose a convertible. It is the car that invites spontaneous excursions, evening sun and freedom on four wheels, says Daniel Odsberg, sales manager at Kvdbil .
He believes that it is particularly in coastal and more affluent municipalities that the convertible is seen – often as a second or third car choice.
– It's not about practical needs, but about pure enjoyment of life. Convertibles are not bought because you have to have them, but because you want them. They are often a combination of car interest and lifestyle marker, says Daniel Odsberg.
In the country's three largest cities, the proportion of convertibles is around the national average. In Stockholm, 0.9 percent of cars are open, in Gothenburg 1.0 percent and in Malmö 1.2 percent.
At the bottom of the list are sparsely populated municipalities in the north – where the climate is unlikely to invite many roofless trips. In four of them, convertibles make up less than 0.1 percent of the total number of registered cars: Bjurholm, Arvidsjaur, Sorselse and Storuman. In Sorsele in Västerbotten, for example, there is only one registered convertible – out of a total of 1,504 passenger cars.

So which cars are rolling through the Swedish landscape with no roof? According to statistics, it is mainly classic and iconic models that dominate. The Mazda MX-5, the world's best-selling two-seater sports car, is at the top with over 3,600 units – followed by the Volvo C70, a Swedish favorite with both comfort and elegance, and the Mercedes-Benz SLK, known for its compact luxury.
Other recurring features on Swedish summer roads are the Peugeot 206, Ford Mustang, BMW Z4 and Porsche 911 – cars that awaken as many dreams as the sound of their engines.

Daniel Odsberg says that new convertibles are now quite rare on the market. The heyday was in the early 2000s, when sheet metal cabriolets like the Volvo C70 and Mercedes SLK were popular. But as electric cars have taken over, these types of models have disappeared from the new car range.
– Today, it is basically only the Mazda Miata, Mini and some more expensive sports cars from Italy that are available in cab versions. This means that the used range has become even more important. At Kvdbil we have cabs for as little as 30,000 SEK – so even if it is often a second or third car, there does not have to be a large extra cost. In addition, cabs follow a clear seasonal pattern, where prices usually drop in the autumn and rise again in the spring. Anyone planning their purchase can therefore find a summer car at a really good price.
