Nervous? That's completely normal! Getting behind the wheel for a practice drive for the first time can feel intimidating, regardless of your age. But don't worry - with the right preparation and practice, you'll soon feel confident on the roads.
Taking the step towards your driver's license is an exciting time! Before you start your practice driving, there are a few things to check off to make sure everything goes smoothly and safely.
Instructor course – Both the person who will be your instructor and you who will be the practice driver need to take an introductory course at a traffic school. The course takes about three hours and gives you a basic understanding of traffic rules and safe driving.
To be allowed to supervise, you must be 24 years of age, have had a driving license for at least five years (issued in Sweden or another ESS country) and have applied for and received a supervisor's permit from the Swedish Transport Agency.
If you are going to take a practice drive, you need to be 16 years old, have completed the introductory training and have applied for a driving license permit from the Swedish Transport Agency.
Both options have their advantages. Driving lessons give you a basic understanding of traffic rules and safe driving under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Private practice driving gives you the opportunity to practice what you have learned and build driving skills in real traffic.
Here are some tips for those of you who are about to start practice driving:
1. Plan your practice run:
Decide on a time and place where you and your tutor can practice without stress and traffic.
Start with simple exercises, such as driving in a secluded parking lot.
Gradually increase the difficulty as you feel more confident.
2. Practice regularly:
The more you practice, the better you will become.
Vary your driving and practice in different traffic situations.
Be prepared to make mistakes - it's part of the learning process.
3. Use the right equipment:
Make sure you have a valid supervisor ID.
Use the practice driving sign on the back of the car.
Make sure the car is in good condition and has all the safety features.
4. Have fun!
Practice driving should be a fun and educational experience. Enjoy being out on the roads and absorb all the new impressions.
Set clear boundaries and expectations from the start.
Be clear about what you want the student to practice.
Give the student time to think and act.
Praise the student for progress, big and small.
Don't be afraid to stop the practice run if you feel unsafe.
Practice driving is an investment in your future safety. It's better to take it easy and practice properly than to rush to get your license. Be patient and enjoy the journey!
Good luck!
